Periodontics

Periodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth: the gums and the bone that supports them.

It can present as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums without affecting the bone) or as periodontitis (where bone destruction occurs, which can lead to loose teeth and tooth loss).

Among the consequences of periodontal disease is gum recession, a condition in which, for various reasons, the tooth roots become exposed.
